Put plain and simple, GrandPerspective is a disk visualization tool. That means it lets you see what’s happening within your hard disk by painting a pretty picture of the different files within and grouping them accordingly. Granted, its not a feature packed, polished software like many of the other disk visualization tools on the market, but what sets GrandPerspective apart is that it is simple, fluid and most importantly, free.
At its core, Grand Perspective only requires that you decide on what you want to scan and then know how to hit the ‘Scan’ button. Beyond that though, GrandPerspective also offers a few levels of customization regarding how you want to scan your files. From deleting files within the visualization, right down to deciding on what colour you want to see your results in, Grand Perspective’s interface is smooth and uncomplicated. Your hard disk is presented in a grid much like that of a city map. It avoids the complications of sorting by file extensions and dates, instead grouping files by location. These files can then be called up in the finder with the click of a button. The added zoom feature enables you to draw out a single file from within the mass and examine its contents, allowing you to not only delete unwanted stuff, but also rediscover videos or pictures you may have forgotten you had.
GrandPerspective is not without its kinks. The visual presentation style is somewhat archaic and can confuse new users. Also, unlike its more expensive cousins, GrandPerspective’s simplicity can come across as crass and under-developed, lacking the depth that some users may seek.
Despite its few shortcomings, GrandPerspective serves well as a maintenance tool. The fact is that its free and not something you would look towards using every single day. GrandPerspective is a lightweight software that costs nothing and sits quietly within your mac, providing you with the basic equipment that you need to keep your hard drive healthy and spacious.
